Understanding the FibroScan at Chung Institute: A Non‑Invasive Tool for Liver Health
At Chung Institute, we’re proud to offer FibroScan®, a state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic tool that helps doctors evaluate liver health quickly, safely, and without the need for invasive procedures.
What Is a FibroScan?
FibroScan is a non‑invasive diagnostic device that uses specialized ultrasound technology—called transient elastography—to assess the condition of the liver. Unlike traditional liver biopsies, which require a needle and carry some risk, a FibroScan simply measures how sound waves pass through liver tissue from outside the body.
Why It’s Important
The FibroScan provides two key pieces of information:
Liver stiffness, which helps determine how much scarring (fibrosis) is present. Higher stiffness may indicate more advanced liver damage. WebMD
Fat content (steatosis) in the liver, which is useful for diagnosing and monitoring conditions like fatty liver disease. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
These measurements allow your doctor to assess liver disease severity and progression, helping guide treatment decisions and monitor response over time. Indy Gastro & Hepatology
What to Expect During the Test
A FibroScan is usually quick (often 5–15 minutes), painless, and performed right in the clinic. You lie comfortably while a small handheld probe is placed over the right side of your abdomen. Sound waves pass into the liver, and the device measures how they travel to gauge liver stiffness and fat levels. There’s no sedation, no needles, and you can drive yourself home afterward.
Benefits for Patients
Non‑invasive & painless — no needle, no incision.
Fast results — clinicians can review findings right away. WebMD
Useful for diagnosis and monitoring of liver conditions such as NAFLD, hepatitis B/C, cirrhosis, and more.
Alternative to liver biopsy in many cases, reducing risk and discomfort. @Medanta
